- The call
- In the parking lot your car key snapped in the driver's door. You are holding the plastic head with the buttons on it, the metal blade is inside the lock, and the spare is on a hook at home.

Overnight the deadbolt froze, and this morning the key would only turn partway. One more push and it sheared off flush with the face of the cylinder.
If a key has just snapped in your lock, the most helpful thing you can do is nothing further to the lock. Keep the half in your hand, note whether the door is locked, and resist the tweezers and the glue, both of which push the piece deeper and add material the locksmith must clear first. On the phone, describe the lock, whether any of the blade shows, and whether the key turned when it broke. Have photo identification to hand, or the ownership papers if it is a vehicle. That short conversation means the locksmith arrives with the right extractors and a plan.

Broken Key Extraction · Markham

Scene 1
The bow and stub you are holding are worth a look before anything else. The cuts on it identify the key blank and give most of the bitting, so a replacement can be read straight from it and the fragment once they are side by side. Its condition tells a story too: thinning at the cuts, a slight bend, a crack line or a shiny worn tip all say the key was near the end of its life. The locksmith also asks about spares. A crisp spare, or the key code tag that came with the lock, is a better pattern for the new key than any worn copy.
Scene 2
If a fragment has been glued in place, driven behind the pins with a screwdriver, or seized into a corroded plug, drilling can be the only route left, and you are told so before it starts. The bit is placed precisely where plug meets housing, freeing the plug to rotate; the damage is contained inside the cylinder and the door, trim and bolt are left alone. A fresh cylinder or complete deadbolt is installed during the same visit, keys are cut and tried, and the door is locked behind you before the van pulls away. It happens rarely, and it still ends with a door you can trust.
Scene 3
If the bolt had been dragging in its strike, that is corrected while the locksmith is there, because a bolt that binds turns every key into a lever. Dropped hinges get longer screws driven into the framing; a strike pocket that pinches the bolt is filed or shifted; a weatherstrip that was pushing the door off square is pared back. The test is simple: the thumb-turn should throw the bolt with one finger and no push on the door. Since wood swells in humid summers and shrinks in dry winter air, a seasonal glance at the screws keeps the key from taking the strain again.

What the key was in: a front door deadbolt, a knob, a padlock, the driver's door or the ignition. Whether any of the key shows above the face. Whether the key turned before it broke and whether the door is locked now. Whether anything has been inserted since. Whether you have the other half, a spare or the key code. And whether the property is owned, rented or managed.
Often fatigue, though not the only cause. A brass blade is weakest where the deepest cut leaves the least metal, and thousands of turns can slowly work a crack into that spot. Then one morning something asks more of it: a frozen cylinder, a bolt binding in a swollen door, grit in the keyway, or turning before the key was fully in. A bent, worn or poorly cut key can also fail on its own, with no such trigger. The lock is inspected afterwards to find which applied.
Extraction is the same careful process; the keyway is usually narrower and the cuts more complex, so it takes longer. The replacement key is different: restricted blanks are cut only from the system's records, so have the authorization card that was supplied with the system to hand, or the locksmith who installed it is contacted. Until then the spare, if you have one, keeps the door working.
