Moving into a home in Cedar Grove means somebody else's keys are still out there: a former owner, a tenant, a painter, a cousin who once watered the plants. Rekeying every exterior lock to one fresh key settles the question in a single visit, and the same job suits a rental turning over or a shop changing hands.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 19 in 100 homes · newer homes
  • About 19% of homes in Markham were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In areas of recent construction, doors mostly carry builder-grade locks that were chosen for the whole development at once. They work, but a household that wants more can upgrade the cylinder or the whole set without any surprises about fit.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Markham (2021 Census).A mix of detached and attached housing means a mix of key habits: spare keys under pots at houses, fob-and-key combinations in buildings. A locksmith can improve both, with a proper key safe or keypad here and a tidy suite cylinder there.

The shop's lever handle goes down as usual, but the latch inside the mortise case never pulls back. Staff are waiting on the sidewalk with their coffees, the door is locked, and the handle is simply moving air.

High Security Locks

ScaleNot to scale

A lock's rating comes down to how long it holds against a skilled attacker with tools. Doors are only as good as their frames. High security work respects both facts, hardening the cylinder and the assembly around it at the same time.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

You have lost count of how many people have had a key to your house over the years: cleaners, a contractor, a former partner, the previous owner's family. The lock still works, but you no longer know who else it works for.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

The old deadbolt has grown lazy. You turn the thumb-turn and the bolt creeps out halfway, then needs a second push with the door pulled tight.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The patio slider is sitting crooked on its track. Its latch is snapped, the frame is bowed where it was pried, and the panel no longer meets the jamb, so the house cannot be closed up for the night.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell whether the lock or the door is the problem?

Try the key while gently pushing, pulling and lifting the door. If it frees up in one position, the bolt is being pinched by the frame and the door is the cause. If nothing changes, look at the key: does it go fully in and refuse to turn, or spin freely? The first points to the cylinder, the second to the tailpiece behind it. Tell the locksmith which you found and the right parts come in the van.

Does rekeying weaken the lock?

No. On a conventional pin-tumbler cylinder, the housing, springs and top pins are untouched and only the bottom pins are exchanged for the same grade of part the lock left the factory with; a homeowner-rekeyable design is reset through its own procedure instead, and a high-security cylinder may also need its sidebar or finger-pin elements reset. If the locksmith notices worn parts, replacing them is offered as a separate step, leaving the lock stronger, not weaker.

One of my locks is stiff and worn. Can it still be rekeyed?

Often the stiffness is grit, old oil and tired springs rather than real wear, and those are handled while the cylinder is on the bench: the plug is cleaned, new springs go in with the new pins, and a dry lubricant finishes it. If the plug has worn oval or the housing is damaged, the locksmith shows you and suggests a replacement cylinder pinned to the same key, rather than fresh pins in a lock that will keep dragging.

Can a lever replace a knob on the same door?

Yes, and it is a common change for anyone who finds a knob hard to grip. Levers use the same bore and backset as knobs, so the swap is usually a direct fit. Levers are handed, so the locksmith checks which way the door swings and chooses or adjusts the lever accordingly. A keyed entry lever pairs well with a deadbolt above it, and interior passage and privacy levers complete the set.
