2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 19 in 100 homes · newer homes
  • About 19% of homes in Markham were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Newer homes are built to standard bores and backsets, so nearly any modern deadbolt, lever set or smart lock fits straight on. The locksmith can offer a wide range of hardware knowing it will mount cleanly without new holes.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Markham (2021 Census).Where housing is mixed, the same street can hold a solid wood front door, a steel townhouse door and a metal-clad suite door. A locksmith fits each with hardware suited to its construction, so every neighbour ends up with a door that locks properly.

High Security Locks

ScaleNot to scale

A lock's rating comes down to how long it holds against a skilled attacker with tools. Doors are only as good as their frames. High security work respects both facts, hardening the cylinder and the assembly around it at the same time.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

You have lost count of how many people have had a key to your house over the years: cleaners, a contractor, a former partner, the previous owner's family. The lock still works, but you no longer know who else it works for.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

Three teenagers, a dog walker, a cleaner and one house key that keeps going missing. You are tired of cutting copies and would rather give each person a code you can switch off, with a proper deadbolt behind it.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

The old deadbolt has grown lazy. You turn the thumb-turn and the bolt creeps out halfway, then needs a second push with the door pulled tight.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

The patio slider is sitting crooked on its track. Its latch is snapped, the frame is bowed where it was pried, and the panel no longer meets the jamb, so the house cannot be closed up for the night.

Frequently asked questions

Can you also deal with the back door, the roll-up shutter and the gate?

Yes. A business lockout covers every opening the premises relies on: the rear service door with its exit device, a roll-up shutter and its padlock, the compound gate, a mailbox in the lobby and interior doors such as the cash office or server closet. Mention each one when you call so the right padlock shackles, cores and cylinders are in the van, and so cylinders that should share a key are handled together.

Should I call the police before the locksmith?

Yes. Call the emergency number if there is any chance the intruder is still there, and the non-emergency line of your local police service otherwise. A break and enter is reported by phone rather than through the online forms used for minor property damage. Ask for the occurrence number, since your insurer will want it. Once the police have released the scene, or told you they are not attending, the locksmith can begin.

How does a smart lock cope with our winters?

Well, with a little planning. Cold reduces battery capacity, so the locksmith fits fresh cells of the type the maker specifies and points you to the low-battery alert, and a new set before the first hard frost is a good habit. The bolt is aligned with clearance so a door that swells or shifts with freeze and thaw does not strain the motor. Keep ice off the keypad, and use lock de-icer only in the key cylinder, never on the touch surface.

Will you drill my mailbox lock, and does that damage the compartment?

Drilling is kept as a last resort, used only when the lock is seized, the key is gone, or an earlier attempt has already damaged the mechanism, and it is explained before it starts. The drill is aimed precisely at the lock itself, so the compartment door around it is left alone, and a new lock is fitted during the same visit so the compartment is never left standing open.
